"The Rifleman: Standing Alone”

This section is designated for my first writing endeavors.....

This section is dedicated to my stories that stand alone from the others. Some were written before The Rifleman: Moving Forward, and are referenced in the series above, while others were written afterward and deviate from the storyline and details of my saga. Since these are written to stand alone, different facts that aren't revealed in the television series (Mark and Lucas's birthdays, details about Lucas and Margaret's family, etc.) may differ from story to story. I loved writing the stories that led to the epilogue of The Rifleman: Moving Forward and couldn't stop. So come along for the ride as we explore the life and bond Lucas and Mark McCain shared. Hold on to your hats, there's some rough terrain ahead!

A Promise Made ― Mark tells of the events that led to Lucas allowing him to keep a hawk as a pet. (A prequel to episode 29, “The Hawk.”)

Strong and Brave Like You
While Lucas is in town, two dusty travelers arrive at the McCains’. Mark is excited to find out that these men are friends with his pa, but he soon begins to question their motives for being there.

Being Friends
A year after Margaret's passing, Lucas and Mark find themselves in Lubbock, Texas. Despite his worries that he won't be able to make any friends, Mark strikes up a friendship with one of his classmates. However, Mark soon discovers that his friend holds a dark secret.

The Evans Gang - part 1
A band of outlaws takes over North Fork, demanding the release of their leader.

Only A Fool - The Evans Gang - part 2
A member of the Evans gang tries to force the law’s hand a second time.

Retribution: The Evans Gang - part 3 - "On him that takes revenge, revenge shall be taken, and by a real evil shall dearly pay for the goods that are but airy and fantastical; it is like a rolling stone, which, when a man hath forced up a hill, will return upon him with greater violence, and break those bones whose sinews gave it motion." -Jeremy Taylor

Lucas is known for his stubbornness, but when he gets sick, Mark's own stubborn determination comes out. However, Mark is going to need all he can get when he finds himself lost and injured after a storm.

Your Little Boy
A man arrives at the McCain ranch, looking to learn how to run a ranch of his own. Learning that this man is the son of an old friend, Lucas invites him to stay for a while. Mark, however, is leery of the stranger and fears for his father's safety.

Four Simple Words
Lucas and Mark’s father-son relationship is put to the test when two brothers come looking for revenge and Mark begins hiding things from his Pa.

Fighting for Memories
Mark struggles with remembering his mother, but when someone tries to kill Mark he forgets much more than that.

When a camping trip with Mark and his friends goes awry, Mark learns some valuable lessons that will change his life.

The Truth
Mark leaves North Fork in search of answers without telling Lucas where he’s going or when he’ll be back. The truth about Enid and his Pa, however, is far from what Mark ever imagined.

The Long Trail
Lucas and Micah are out of town when they discover Dan Hewitt has escaped from prison and is headed towards North Fork. Racing against time to get home, Lucas has yet to discover that Hewitt isn't Mark's only threat.

The Principle
More than once, Lucas has taken the witness stand despite the possible consequences. This time, Mark is determined to follow in his father’s footsteps and do the same.

Mark finds himself torn between his badge, his Pa, and the woman he loves.
(Long story warning!)

Dead or Alive “NO!” Mark boomed; briefly taken aback by the way he had spoken. “...I won’t stop. I won’t stay here and you can’t make me. My pa is out there, somewhere. Somewhere he shouldn’t be. I haven’t seen my pa in five weeks. Five weeks! For most of that, I’ve had to entertain the idea that he might be dead! But it doesn’t matter! Dead or alive, I’m going to find my pa, and I’m gonna bring him home, and I don’t care if it kills me!”

Brother Against Brother Mark visits his pa's estranged brother and quickly finds himself caught in the middle of repercussions from their past.

I'll Be Home for Christmas ― Following a bitter-sweet Thanksgiving, Margaret apprehensively says goodbye to her husband just before Christmas.

The Rifleman: Moving Forward

Growing up, my brothers watched “The Rifleman” on occasion, and with nothing better to do I would join them. To be honest, I didn't understand why they liked the show so much; yet as I watched more episodes I found myself intrigued by the family aspect in the western series… and I fell in love with the bond Lucas and Mark shared.
I started writing my stories so I could explore their relationship even more and dive deeper into the depths of their bond.

Five season wasn't long enough for me; I wanted to see Mark finish growing up, get married, have children. I wanted to see the bond the McCain men shared continue through Mark's adult life. I also wanted to see some old friends come back to town.

“Someone to Call Pa” picks up just about where the TV show ended, and I welcome you to explore what the McCain's life could've been like. I so enjoyed writing these stories; I hope you enjoy reading about the McCain’s lives after the fifth season!

5.  Aunt Camilla

6.  Do you trust me?
 "Cassie, do you trust me?"
Mark's question caught Cassie by surprise, but after a moment she responded.
"... Of course I do."
"Then please trust me and my judgement now. This is what I've got to do, and I have to do it alone. You can't tell anyone that I've left; they'll figure it soon enough when I'm not at church Sunday."

7.  Family
When buried family secrets are revealed, Mark and Cassie are both reminded that family is what you make it.

8.  The Character of a Coward, Part One

And the life of your son could be the cost.
This is your one and only warning...
Come, lest you join me in my mourning.
