Frank's first film was in Australia in 1912. His first USA film was in 1916, Harmony in a Flat which was a short film.

His career spanned over sixty years with over two hundred credits. He is best known for his work on A Chump at Oxford (1940), The New Adventures of Tarzan (1935) and Mary of Scotland (1936).

He appeared in four Best Picture Academy Award winners, the first two of which were in consecutive years: How Green Was My Valley (1941), Mrs. Miniver (1942), Around the World in Eighty Days (1956) and My Fair Lady (1964).
